My Nerd Blood is Excited: Emerald City Comic Con
by Meg Humphrey
I designate Emerald City Comic Con to be my “fun” con each year. That isn’t to say that I don’t have fun at all of the other cons I go to and that I don’t have any work/responsibilities. It just so happens that while helping out my friends at the DesuDesu de Studio booth, running around to see panels, and networking with awesome folks makes for an A+ convention in my books!

I even cosplayed for the first time in 3 years!! I was very happy to see a really great Star Spangled Man with a Plan!
I know, I know, Sir Patrick Stewart was there, but for me it was ALL ABOUT STARGATE. Considering that I had gone to Star Wars Celebration VI, Ray Parks, Billy D., and (although she couldn’t make it) Carrie Fisher didn’t hold too much allure for me. Michael Shanks (Dr. Daniel Jackson from SG-1) and Paul McGillion (Dr. Carson Beckett from Atlantis) were my top priorities! Alexa Doig, who had a brief part as Dr. Lam, was SO adorable that she makes me reevaluate my opinion of her character on SG-1. There was even an added bonus of Alexis Cruz (Skaara from the Stargate movie as well as SG-1) crashing Sunday’s Stargate panel and selling his graphic novel down in the Exhibitor’s hall! Everyone was super lovely, funny, and very kind when I met them!

YOU CAN’T REALLY TELL, but this is me asking Paul McGillion (<3 ❤ ❤ <3) a question during his panel. My heart was beating out of my chest and my legs almost gave out on the way back to my seat!
Outside of my Stargate obsession, the other highlights of ECCC were the TWO voice actor panels I attended. They were the Star Wars Radio Show and the Movie Mash-Up panel. Basically they have 5-8 voice actors doing whatever voices they can (this is not limited to the voices they are credited for) for different characters as they read through scripts. The Movie Mash-Up was deceptive – only those who attended the Radio Show on Friday night knew that they would be performing the beginning of Empire Strikes Back on Saturday! Friday night Phil LaMarr stole the show with his fantastic Morgan Freeman, Chris Rock, and Michael Jackson voices. Saturday, however, was hands down perfection thanks to Jim Cummings. I won’t spoil the greatness because you can watch it all over at FlipOn TV and probably someone on YouTube by now, but I will give you 3 words: Vader. The. Pooh.

Jack and my new tradition is taking a picture with the 501st every year! This is only our second one and I’m loving the Tusken Raider in the back!
ECCC isn’t a perfect convention. The Exhibitor’s hall may have expanded too much without being able to allow more attendees. The lines for Celebrity photo ops were sometimes really poorly arranged and the communication between minions (volunteer staffers) wasn’t great when I witnessed it. Some times for panels and even the show room were misprinted. But believe me, I won’t be giving them too hard of time – I work enough conventions to know how difficult it is and it could have been MUCH MUCH worse! I know the ECCC staff did the best they could do and they always aim to improve! We should be thankful that they put on such a great show!

Best mash up: Star Wars and Muppets! Especially because they included Sam Eagle (my favorite)!
I’m very excited about 2014 already! I’ll cross my fingers for more Stargate guests even though meeting Jason Momoa in 2012 and talking with him for 20 minutes about Star Wars and ewoks has set the awesomeness-of-meeting-celebrities-bar SKY HIGH. Thanks a lot.
The highlight for me was the wonderful art, including Brian Snoddy, Raven Mimura, Anthony Scott Waters, and Julie Baroh (all artists featured in one or another cardset of Magic: The Gathering).
John Schindehette’s surprise panel “Education for your Art Career” was also really great. All the people name-dropped are awesome people too, and it was really great catching up.
I dressed as Harry Dresden for the convention. I made a parody entry, but haven’t written a full report yet because I caught the con hangover mid-Monday. 😦
I’m so glad that you had so much fun. I went to ECCC this year and it was my first year cosplaying and my very first con. I loved your costume, it was fabulous!
