Predator on the Big Screen
For those of you who don’t know me personally (or don’t follow me on twitter), you probably don’t know how big of a Predator fan I am. I love everything that has come out of that franchise. The books, the comics, the action figures, and ALL of the movies (I think I’m the only person I know who liked the first Aliens vs Predator better than AVPR). Predator came out the same year I was born, so seeing it in theaters was never an option. Imagine how happy I was when I saw that Seattle Science Fiction Film Festival included Predator on their outstanding line up of sci-fi classics! I immediately bought two tickets.
I’m all for bringing back older movies to the theater. It gives fans a chance to experience them as they should be – immersed in the setting and surround sound. It also means that every single person in the theater is a fan and you are automatically connected to each other through your mutual love. Seeing Predator on the big (big!) screen was a significant life event.
Everyone was hyped. Everyone was READY. The anticipation before much beloved one liners was palpable. Cheers filled the audience for something as simple as seeing Carl Weathers’ name appear in the opening credits. The sight of well known biceps and six-packs was a joyous experience. Everyone, out loud and in their head, yelled “GET TO THE CHOPPA!!!” with Arnold. If anyone in the theater had lukewarm feelings about the movie, I can’t imagine them leaving without a renewed appreciation for those sexual tyrannosauruses.
So this is my message to our dear readers – if there’s a movie being re-released in theaters that you have special feelings for (at one time of your life or another), GO SEE IT! There are few other fan experiences that compare to being surrounded by your fellow nerds. You may not have time to bleed, but you have time for that.
