Nerd of the Week
Meet Heather, a Crochet Nerd
Interview by Terra Olsen
What are you nerdy for?
I’m nerdy for lots of things, including books and movies. At the moment, I’m especially nerdy for crafts! Specifically, crocheting geeky hats.

How did you discover nerdy crochet?
My grandmother taught me how to crochet when I was in gradeschool. I’ve maintained it as a hobby over the years, and was inspired by the video game “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim,” to create my own horned helmet out of yarn. I made one for my husband, and then for my son, and then added them to my Etsy shop.

What about Skyrim sparked the nerd in you?
The game is amazingly immersive. I love the scenery, the questlines, the gameplay, the characters, and the music. All of these elements are combined so artfully, and it’s a beautiful and completely engaging game.
Where do you want to take your nerdy crochet in the future?
I’m always working on little projects. I love that I can take my projects with me anywhere, because all I need is a crochet hook and a skein of yarn. I don’t have a long-term plan for my craft. It’s a fantastic hobby that allows me to follow whatever whimsy catches my imagination. I’m enjoying making helmets and little Princess Leia hats for babies — buns and all.

Any advice for others interested in exploring nerdy crafts?
Just have fun, and do what you enjoy. Try new things, and know that nobody creates a perfect product on the first try.
