I’m a Singin’ Pirate:

Portland’s Premier Pirate Rock Band

By: Meg Humphrey

I sure do love sea shanties a ridiculous amount. I got my first taste of them as a child thanks to “Whale of a Tale” from Disney’s 20,000 Under the Sea and from checking out a CD from the local library that included sailing classics like the “Rhyme of the Chivalrous Shark” and “Billy Bones.” I was at trivia one night at Renton’s A Terrible Beauty, and they had an Irish folk band break out with “The Mermaid.” I didn’t realize I was singing along until someone at the table commented on it!

The problem is that there are only so many diddies that were written during the golden age of sailing. When my sister dragged my dad and me to a bookstore concert, I was introduced to Captain Bogg and Salty. Dreams came true that day.

Captain Bogg and Salty is a pirate themed rock band based out of Portland who is popular with children AND adults! They play packed shows in any place from libraries to night clubs. Each member of the band is one or more members of the crew. There is Captain Bogg along with Salty, of course, but also Ramshackle, Mr. Filibuster, Sunny Jim First Mate McGraw, Buckle, Squeezy, Chucklehead Pete, Charlie Scuppers, and Mr. Gilly. Each crew member has a different personality, voice, and job about The Pollywogg.

They currently have four CDs: Bedtime Stories for Pirates, Pegleg Tango, Prelude to Mutiny, and Emphatical Piratical. There’s all kinds of music covered between these CDs – rock covers of classic pirate tunes, throw-back surfing jams, lullabies, new but perfectly traditional sounding shanties, and even a FABULOUS cover of “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid.

If you ever have the chance to see them live, go do it! Listen to their music! Buy their CDs! Eat a Lime (because scurvy don’t taste good)!

Link to their music video for “Pieces of 8ight”.
