The Twilight Zone: An Interview with My Mom

The Twilight Zone: An Interview with My Mom

Interview by Virginia Eader

What about the twilight zone brings out the nerd in you?

I don’t think I have any nerd in me. I don’t even know what that means.

When do you first remember watching TZ?

I watched it with my big brothers and I thought it was so cool. It was a scary show to watch as a young girl and I only got to watch it because I happened to be in the room. I always loved to hear the guy with the big eyebrows say You’re entering the Twilight Zone.

I really liked the [episode] where the alien went to the bar and you couldn’t tell he was an alien until he took his hat off and revealed his third eye

What do you like most about TZ?

The surprise ending.

What is the scariest episode you’ve ever seen?

That scary kid that put people in the cornfield and he turned that man into a jack-in-a-box. The whole town was scared of this little kid.

(Such a great episode! You can watch clips here.)

How many episodes have you seen?

I’ve seen them all.

 Without a doubt?

I think so. Yep, I’m pretty sure.

What is your all-time favorite episode?

I think my favorite one is the Eye of the Beholder, I think it’s called. When everyone looks like a pig and they think the pretty people are hideous so they send them off to a place for hideous people to live.

It shows that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

[The show] usually always has a good message.

I also like the poem from the episode where the girl goes to visit a witch to get a potion so the fella she liked would like her instead of another girl. There was a ballad that was sung at the beginning and end of the episode.

Any episode you didn’t like?

Yes. Let me think….I don’t like that one where there was a time machine and this man went in it and went to another time and ended up being on the end of a rope and somehow he switched places with a really mean guy from the future who went and killed a bunch of people. It didn’t have a good message I don’t think.

How many episodes have you watched in one sitting?

I bet I have watched up to six in one sitting during the Twilight Zone marathon. But we have many, many hours recorded on DVR.

Isn’t my mom great?! Even if she doesn’t know what a nerd is. For the record, I wanted to share that a few of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes just so happen to be starring the one and only William Shatner (Star Trek’s Captain Kirk), Nightmare at 20,000 Feet and Nick of Time. Also, The Long Distance Call, which you can watch in full .

Don’t forget to bring in the new year with SyFy’s Twilight Zone Marathon all day December 31st 8am through January 2nd 5am.
